Apple’s new support document says not to put a wet iPhone in rice.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 phones are more resistant to water penetration compared to old models, But they are still vulnerable to water. One of the common recommendations on the internet for drying the phone is to put it in a bowl full of rice.

Internet advice says to unplug the phone, turn it off, dry the water with a towel, and then leave it in a bowl of rice for two to three days to drain excess water from the device.

Apple’s new support document specifically mentions not to put a wet iPhone in rice. Here are Apple’s instructions for drying wet phones:

  • Do not dry your iPhone using an external heat source or air pressure.

  • Do not insert a foreign object such as an ear cleaner or tissue into the connector.

  • Do not put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so will cause small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.

Instead of putting the device in a rice bowl, Apple says it’s better to be patient. The company says:

  • Hold your iPhone with the connector facing down and tap gently with your hand to remove excess liquid. Place the iPhone in a dry, well-ventilated area.

  • After at least 30 minutes, try to charge it with a Lightning or USB-C cable or connect an external device to it.

  • If you get the warning again, there is still fluid in the connector or under the cable pins. Leave your iPhone in a dry place with air circulation for up to a day. During this time, you can try to connect the accessory or charge it again. It may take up to 24 hours for the iPhone to dry completely.

  • If your phone is dry; But it still won’t charge, disconnect the cable from the adapter and the adapter from the wall outlet, then plug them back in.

If these things do not work, we recommend that you take the phone to a repair shop and a specialist.
