Elon Musk says that OpenAI would not have happened without his help, and even he himself was the one who suggested the name of the company.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims he is the reason OpenAI, the maker of the popular ChatGPT chatbot, exists. In an interview, he talked about his investment in this company and explained about signing an open letter to stop the development of artificial intelligence.

CNBC‘s David Fiber recently had an interview with Elon Musk, and in part of this interview, he talked about his initial investment in OpenAI and his recent criticisms of the company. “I’m the reason why OpenAI exists,” says Musk. He claims that if it were not for his initial investments, this company would not have existed.

Musk says he was the one who suggested the name OpenAI. Part of this name is actually taken from the term Open-Source meaning “open text” which was supposed to refer to the open nature of this company against the closed nature of Google. The CEO of Tesla claims that OpenAI was originally supposed to be an open and non-profit model that, unlike Google, did not seek profit, but now the situation has completely changed.

Musk also claims that he brought the key scientists and engineers of OpenAI to the company, and these people are the reason for the company’s success.

The prominent entrepreneur, who recently incorporated a company called X.AI, says OpenAI has not paid much attention to the safe development of artificial intelligence. In March, Musk signed an open letter to AI labs urging them to halt the development of more advanced tools.

He says that despite signing this letter, he knew that nothing special would probably happen. However, in his opinion, signing this letter was something that should be done to be recorded in history.

In another part of this interview, Musk says that he used to be a close friend of Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, and they spent hours discussing the nature of artificial intelligence. Musk claims that Page was a fan of artificial intelligence and didn’t seem to have any particular concerns about the technology’s safety. Musk says that Page even called him a “speciesist” and claimed that he valued human intelligence more than machine intelligence.
