Meta buys 350,000 powerful graphics for artificial intelligence
Mark Zuckerberg plans to buy hundreds of thousands of Nvidia graphics cards to power Meta’s artificial intelligence programs.
By publishing an Instagram post, Mark Zuckerberg announced his company’s plans to buy Nvidia hardware equipment and improve artificial intelligence technology by the end of 2024.
The famous billionaire plans to use Nvidia graphics to power open-source artificial intelligence platforms and develop wearable devices based on this technology.
According to Zuckerberg, Meta plans to purchase 350,000 Nvidia H100 graphics to strengthen its artificial intelligence hardware infrastructure. Of course, the total amount of graphics that this company will buy from different brands will reach 600 thousand units, which will provide extraordinary computing power to Meta.
Research company Omdia says that Microsoft and Meta recorded the largest volume of Nvidia H100 graphics orders last year, which have a larger purchase volume than Google, Amazon and Oracle. The addition of 350,000 units of new graphics processors undoubtedly makes Meta one of Nvidia’s biggest customers.
Zuckerberg says investing in meta AI infrastructure is necessary to create artificial general intelligence (AGI); An exciting technology that offers features such as the power of reasoning, programming, coding, and other capabilities needed by researchers, content creators, and ordinary users around the world.
With a responsible approach, Meta decides to develop a new artificial intelligence model in an open-source manner and ensure the highest level of access for users and organizations of any size.
High demand for Nvidia’s H100 graphics has led to long waiting periods, which can cause some companies to fall behind in research areas.
According to reports, the delivery time for H100 graphics orders is between 36 and 52 months due to the increased demand for advanced AI hardware.
The increase in computing power and processing speed is considered the biggest driver of Meta and other companies active in the field of artificial intelligence. According to Nvidia, the H100 is up to 30 times faster than the A100 in processing common models of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC).
At the end of his post, Zuckerberg explained the growing need for wearable devices; Products that allow users to interact with Metaverse daily, and in this context, he mentioned Ray-Ban’s Meta smart glasses, which people can use anywhere and all day long.
The price of Nvidia’s H100 graphics card reaches 30-40 thousand dollars, which is much higher than the price of a normal graphics card, and buying 350 thousand units of this product will have a very heavy cost on Meta’s shoulders.
